Lake Cypress Springs: Twin (S)oaks Park

Our much-anticipated Spring Break church camp-out kicked off last Thursday. A year in advance, I had booked this secluded little campground that is perfect for a large group that wants a whole place to themselves! The day before the trip, we anticipated some showers on Thursday but clearing up on Friday and sunny through the weekend. By the time we arrived Thursday, the weather forecasters were saying rain solid through Friday but clearing up for the weekend. By Friday, they said rainy through Saturday, and by Saturday morning we knew all hope was gone. We endured almost nonstop rain the entire time, and the campground became a mud pit like nothing I've experienced before. Our friends are some real troopers, though... they stuck it out despite soggy tents, muddy clothes, insufficient layers for the cool temps, and under stocked rain boots at all the local stores.

In spite of the weather, our kids had a fantastic time and seemed unfazed. The adults managed to make the most of it and still enjoyed some time away from it all.

This is typical of all the kids this weekend!

Don't worry. Oliver has a big sister.

Drew and Jamie arrived on Friday afternoon in style!

On Friday, Levi (almost 5) was wearing his new rain boots and ventured out near the edge of the lake without his parents' knowledge. I heard a big commotion and ran out of the camper to see him emerging from the water, sopping wet and crying from fear--fear that he had almost drowned and fear that he had lost one of his new rain boots!

On Saturday, our big excitement started with one of the kids crashing his bike into an upright faucet at an empty campsite, breaking the PVC and the pipe, spewing water by the gallon into the air. We tried calling the park maintenance, but on weekends the recording said to call 911. We did, and by the time someone finally showed up, Chris had found the main water line and shut it off, and he and Drew were on their way to Home Depot for the parts to fix it.

The man who arrived was calling a plumber, but I told him someone was already planning to get the stuff to fix it. He told me they'd take care of it, but couldn't give me a timeline. Considering that we had a lot of adults and kids who would need the restrooms, Chris and Drew repaired the whole thing and I tried calling the guy to have him cancel the plumber. When they arrived again, we told them the whole thing had been fixed properly. They started to get a little perturbed but Drew quickly cut them off by pointing out that the PVC was not up to code anyway... so that shut them up.

The wood was so wet that Doug got out the blow torch to light a fire!

David helped with his lighter. ;)

My friend Amy, who "doesn't sport" and rarely camps, braved the mud for part of the weekend!
