Several weeks ago I asked Chris if I could splurge a little on tickets to take Audrey to the Broadway musical The Little Mermaid. After comparing prices, we decided to see it in Dallas and include the boys of the family. It also worked out that we could see it over Spring Break, so last night we allowed plenty of time to get to the Music Hall at Fair Park.
Jamie treated Audrey to a special Little Mermaid costume dress to wear to the performance, so Audrey was prancing around and posing for me by the Ariel display in the lobby.
As I'm taking pictures of her, people around are exclaiming over how cute she looks and we are getting compliments left and right. So fun!
We milled around for a little while, killing time until the performance, when we were approached by a man with a badge. He introduced himself as a public relations associate for Dallas Summer Musicals and said something about a cover shoot for an upcoming publication. All I really heard was when he asked if Audrey would like to go backstage before the show to meet the star playing Ariel and take some pictures! Um, YES! (Actually, Audrey was intimidated by the man and told him no. We told him she'd love to.) He presented her with a bag of gifts, including a soundtrack from the Broadway musical, an iTunes gift card, and a tiara from Cinderella. The thing that convinced her, though, was the fancy lollipop she was promised after taking pictures.
About twenty minutes before the show, we headed backstage and took in all the sights--the props, the crew, some cast members finalizing their costumes--until we arrived at a green room that was set up for the photographs. Along with our family was one other little girl, a three-year-old named Griffin with her mom. Griffin was super outgoing and excited to meet Ariel, and had been to several musicals already. This was Audrey's first! They were then each given a doll from the gift shop as a souvenir.
When Ariel came in, she was in full costume and makeup and greeted the girls. Audrey immediately ducked behind me and became a cat, on all fours, pretending to lick my arm. Awesome. Ariel introduced herself and Noah had to tell her Audrey's name, to which Audrey replied, "No, I'm Ariel!" The actress said, "Me, too!" Griffin went first since she had no reservations, but when she was done, Audrey posed like a champ. They allowed me to get a quick shot when they were finished!
They did some other poses and promised to send us the pictures, so fingers crossed! It made our night before the show even started!
Side note: look closely at Audrey's feet. On the way to Dallas, she got a cramp in her foot and took her shoes off, then put them back on herself. I didn't notice they were on the wrong feet until after the photo shoot! Hilarious!
The show was amazing--singing was incredible, sets and lighting and script were simply magical. Audrey sat perfectly through the entire thing, using her opera glasses occasionally, loving every minute. Noah seemed to enjoy it, too, although we were a bit distracted at the beginning of Act II when his top front tooth fell out and was lost until the lights came up. What a night!
