National Parks Road Trip Days 16-17: Aztec Ruins in NM, then to TX!

After leaving the Visitor Center Saturday morning, we knew we were at the end of our adventures. We faced a long drive to Tucumcari, NM and then another full day of driving to get home.

However, the drive would take us directly through Aztec, NM... where the Aztec Ruins National Monument could be a quick stop for the kids to officially earn their Four Corners badges. Why not??

We happened to get there right as a ranger program was starting in the reconstructed Great Kiva.

This really was the perfect wrap-up of our whole Mesa Verde experience, as we were able to see what one of the kivas really was like back when it was used by the Native Americans.

This was also a great stop for the kids, because unlike in Mesa Verde, they were given free reign to run around through the ruins. It was really fun!

National Monuments also give ranger badges, so the kids added to their collection!

We also ate lunch there in Aztec at the A&W Root Beer restaurant. The kids LOVED ordering through a telephone, and the food and root beer floats were delicious!

Continuing on, we made an afternoon stop in Albuquerque to visit with my cousin CJ and his wife Lindsay. It was so good to catch up with them!

CJ was our "uber"

It happened that President Biden was in Albuquerque that day, too, regarding the terrible fires plaguing New Mexico. Luckily, his visit didn't affect the traffic for us. We made it into Tucumcari and the "Blaze-N-Saddle" RV park that evening for a quick overnight stop. We didn't even unhook the camper!

Sunday morning we were ready to hit the road early... when we had a little incident. The slide on our camper got stuck when we were trying to pull it in--the motor on one side had come "unplugged," we finally realized. It was a major headache but we got it all worked out and corrected, thankfully! We were able to get on the road for the LONG drive home.
