Day 7 Spring Break Road Trip: Davis Mountains State Park and Fort Davis

Friday morning started early for some of our group, because I had scheduled a "Survival Hike" with a state park ranger at 9 a.m. There were definitely some grumbles about the early hour, but we soon realized it was worth it!

Our hike started at the CCC "picture window" structure and continued on parts of the Old CCC Trail and Skyline Drive Trail.

Ranger Ty was our guide, and he did a fantastic job of quizzing the kids about survival tactics in the Davis Mountains. He was patient with their questions and took time to show us which berries are edible, where to hike down to Limpia Creek, and much more.

Poor Ranger Ty, can't escape the chatterbox!

We HIGHLY recommend the Survival Hike! The two hours flew by and we learned a lot about the Davis Mountains, along with taking in the beautiful scenery.

Later that afternoon, we all decided to try the hike down to Fort Davis.

We knew it was a pretty steep hike, and we didn't really want to hike it back up, so we sent Doug and Chris with the vehicles to Fort Davis and they hiked up and met us about halfway, then continued the hike down with us.

Once we got to the boulder climbing section of the hike, the kids declared this the BEST HIKE EVER!

Doug and Chris caught up to us near the Fort Davis overlook, which was really spectacular.

The part down into Fort Davis was really steep and thankfully, had rails along the switchbacks!

I especially appreciated the purple variety of cactus we saw all around

Silly kids

And suddenly, we were at Fort Davis!

After the hike, we walked over to the caboose ice cream shop we had scouted out a few days before and rewarded ourselves with Blue Bell ice cream cones.
