July 4th Weekend--Part 1

Chris and me before our performance
I know, we aren't even to July 4th yet!

The crowd in front of us at the Concert
Last night Chris, Noah and I joined family and friends (Mom, Dad, Diana, Mark, Stephanie, Drew, Jamie, Sharon and Jim) at the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's Concert in the Garden. We enjoyed it so much last year that we want to make a tradition of catching one of the concerts celebrating Independence Day. We got there early, ate lots of food and snacks and enjoyed visiting until the concert began at 8:00. There were several thousand people in attendance (it is held at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, where Chris and I had our wedding reception), but they have a great sound system set up so we could hear just fine from our lawn seats.

Singing the National Anthem
Noah was a little paranoid all evening about the fireworks coming. In fact, he started covering his ears in anticipation around 7 p.m., but we convinced him that he would get tired of holding his hands there for several hours. When it got dark, we busted out the glow-in-the-dark jewelry, which was quickly snatched up by all the women, of course.

When the fireworks did start, Noah watched most of the show through his hands--anyone who goes to scary movies knows this is quite effective!
Noah enjoys (?) the fireworks
The orchestra played three Sousa marches while the fireworks erupted in sync... which means the show lasted over ten minutes! Chris recorded the last piece (Stars and Stripes Forever, of course! Go piccolo!) on my Flip, so you can get an idea of what a great fireworks display we enjoyed! It's still not the same as being there, of course.

Today our church planned an Independence Day luncheon and program honoring our military after morning worship. Chris and I, plus my mom, got involved in the a cappella singing group that performed during the program.

Kelly and me with the sopranos
We sang The Star-Spangled Banner; Battle Hymn of the Republic; My Country, Tis of Thee; God Heal Our Land; and Armed Services Medley, honoring our veterans. Jamie and Drew came to hear us (and keep Noah entertained), and Drew recorded a couple of the songs for me. Here's the National Anthem:
