Monday morning we drove back to the military park to take in
the U.S.S. Cairo, the only remaining ironclad gunboat from the Civil War.
It
was at the bottom of the river for 102 years before it was brought up in three
pieces and restored. They allowed people to walk through the gunboat and view
many of the artifacts (behind glass) in the little museum.
We hit the road, headed for Alabama with the
intention of touring the U.S.S. Alabama battleship on the way down to Gulf
Shores.
We were really impressed with the extent of the tour—we walked through
the majority of the battleship, even down into the engine room, into #1 gun
turret, and way up above the bridge.

Lots of climbing! Lots of claustrophobia!
We were running out of time before it closed, but we managed to quickly tour a
WWII submarine, the U.S.S. Drum, on site before we left.

Another hour or so and
we arrived at our hotel in beautiful Gulf Shores, “small town, big beach!" Drew
and I walked to the grocery store next door to stock up on breakfast items and
sandwich fixings for the week, and it was quite a sight to see Drew ambling
through the hotel lobby with a loaded-down grocery cart.
