Jamie could hardly contain her anticipation of experiencing the expansive white sand beaches, so we were up and out early Tuesday morning, butts on the beach by 9:30 a.m.! I could hardly believe the relative emptiness of the beaches—we practically had the gulf to ourselves for awhile, and even when the crowds started to come, there was plenty of beach to go around.
Audrey was fascinated by the sand and a little afraid of the waves, but by the end of the week she and Noah were both little water babies.
Noah is NOT a fan of the salt water, however, so keeps his mouth tightly clamped shut when he’s within three feet of the ocean.
After we ate our picnic lunch and played a bit longer, we drove the couple of miles back to the hotel for swimming (to wash the sand away, haha), showers and naps.
Before dinner we fulfilled one of Drew's greatest dreams: to take the kids to Souvenir City, an obnoxious and humongous store stocked with any souvenir you can imagine. The entrance alone makes kids (and grandpas) want to check it out!
Papa allowed the kids to pick a souvenir, so Noah added to his snow globe collection with a very cool pirate snow globe. Audrey chose a pink glitter dolphin with ruffles on the tail and fins, and she is in LOVE.
Tuesday’s dinner was at another one of my research finds, juxtaposed with our hotel and serving probably the best crab cakes I've ever eaten. Kitty’s Kafe provides southern home cookin’, with so many options it’s overwhelming! Chris ordered a tuna salad sandwich and Jamie and Drew both had the meatloaf. No complaints! The food was awesome.
The next item on the agenda was a special twilight tour at Fort Morgan, a fort established after the War of 1812 (it was completed in 1834) as a way for the young United States to reinforce its southern coast.
Fort Morgan was central to the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay (ever heard the phrase, “Damn the torpedoes”?), and it provided protective fire for blockade runners. The fort was also used during WWII as protection for Mobile Bay in case of German invasion.
Some men dressed as Civil War soldiers demonstrated a Civil War rifle and cannon and talked to people about the history of the fort.
Back in Gulf Shores, we stopped for a yummy custard treat at Shake’s, then back to the hotel for bed.
