Summer Road Trip, Day 5: Gulf Shores, AL

Wednesday morning brought our long-awaited pirate ship cruise out of Orange Beach!

Noah preps for his Pirate Cruise
We set sail into Terry Cove at 9:30 a.m. on a pirate ship out of Hudson Marina, complete with a pirate captain, first mate, and lady pirate.

Noah participated in all kinds of activities, including a treasure hunt that earned him a soft drink at the end.

The adults enjoyed the pirates’ clever one-liners, and spotted lots of dolphins and even a couple of sea turtles.

Audrey’s nerves got the best of her for most of the trip—she wasn’t sure what was going on and was clinging to me throughout most of the two-hour trip. Toward the end, though, she finally enjoyed a soft drink and the view from the galley.

After our enjoyable (but hot) sailing cruise, we decided to head to Lambert’s Cafe, home of the “throwed rolls” and, as Drew puts it, “cubic food.” Wow! Some of the best dinner rolls I’ve ever had, hot off the pans and thrown right to us. Another unique aspect of Lambert’s is the “pass arounds,” different side items that servers walk around and deliver to your plate or napkin in any serving size you wish. These options include fried okra (you had me at hello!), boiled cabbage, apple butter for the rolls, macaroni and tomatoes, and fried potatoes. All of this is in ADDITION to your meal, which usually comes with two sides! I ordered the chicken salad with a baked potato and sliced peaches. Drew wasn’t kidding when he said, “Come hungry!” It was a late lunch and we all groaned at the thought of eating anything else that day. Chris and I each had a small bowl of cereal at the hotel that evening, but otherwise, that Lambert’s meal held us over.

After lunch, back to the hotel for naps, followed by a drive to the Wharf to ride the Ferris Wheel.

To me, this was a bit of a bummer. Nothing spectacular about the views and the name of the glorified shopping center is misleading—no water in sight.

We left there and went back to the main drag to play some miniature golf, and struck gold when we chose Pirates’ Island for our evening of fun.

The golf course was beautifully landscaped and well shaded from the late day sun. Audrey loved walking around on each green, holding tight to her ball and club.

The only time she put the ball down
Mommy! SHEEP!
Noah pouted when he wasn't the best golfer, but got over it eventually and enjoyed the game.

Chris and Drew tied for first, and Drew even had a hole in one. After our golf game was over, we returned to our hotel for Noah to swim with Chris and Drew while Jamie and I bathed Audrey and put her to bed.
