Day 1 Spring Break Road Trip: Caverns of Sonora and Davis Mountains

For spring break this year, we wanted to do a big camping trip with our good friends Doug, Tanya, Scarlett and Oliver and then our parents wanted to join, so our group of twelve planned a grand Texas adventure to the Caverns of Sonora and on to Davis Mountains State Park.

We left early on Saturday, and luckily our family decided to caravan with our friends, so we were there to help when Doug felt something and pulled over somewhere between Brady and Menard. Turns out, both tires on one side of his 36' trailer were completely shredded, and had in the process damaged the sheet metal and punctured some water lines beneath the trailer.

I got on the phone and called the first "roadside assistance" place I could find anywhere in our vicinity, and they arrived to help surprisingly quickly.

It wasn't cheap, but the pros did a fantastic job of replacing the tires right there so we could be on our way. In the meantime, Doug and Chris busted out some power tools and cut off the damaged sheet metal.

The kids went on to Sonora with Nana and Pandy in the motor home

We speculated about whether the tires were in bad shape already, or if he had simply hit something that he didn't notice. We soon found out that perhaps the tires weren't going to get him to his destination when, yet again, Doug pulled to the side of the road after hearing a tire on the other side of the trailer blow.

Chris and Doug put the spare in its place, adding some air using a bicycle pump.

At that point we were just outside of the town of Sonora, and they could see that the fourth trailer tire was close to blowing as well. We limped into town and the guys checked the air pressure, letting a lot of pressure out of the one that was barely making it. We took our time getting to our camping spots at the RV park next to the caverns. We were relieved because Jamie, Drew and my parents had arrived early, and Jamie had already paid for our spots and discussed the details with the people there, designating two spots next to them for us to be able to just pull in and set up upon arrival. However, once we got there, exhausted and frazzled from quite the road trip, a guy named Bill approached us and told us we couldn't put our pop-up in one of the pull-through sites but that he would find us a good spot to set up. He then indicated a tight area with low trees, like he thought we could just squeeze in there. I was confused since I knew Jamie had it all worked out, and I told him we thought everything was taken care of and that the site was already paid for. He kept insisting that we couldn't camp there but that he would find us a place if I just gave him a minute to think about it. He didn't seem to comprehend that we wanted to be next to our friends and family, and he also picked the wrong person and the wrong time to make a big deal out of something like this. I told him to think a little faster since it was getting dark and we needed to set up. Jamie had a few words with him, too, and finally he threw his hands up and said, "I'm not going to argue with you about it! Just camp there!" so I said, "Great! Thanks," and we did. I think he expected me to back down but we were hungry, tired, and just not in the mood for his ridiculousness. (Jamie later went and made nice with him, explaining about our long day and apologizing about the misunderstanding. That was when he told us he wanted to be our personal tour guide in the caverns. Wonderful.) Thankfully, my parents had burgers ready to go as soon as we were all set up and we were glad to be settled in before the storms came through that night!
