Day 2 Spring Break Road Trip: Caverns of Sonora and Davis Mountains

 On Sunday we woke up to a beautiful, sunny day and kicked it off with a visit to the peacocks that are on property at the Caverns of Sonora. The kids couldn't WAIT to introduce us to them, especially to the albino peacock "Kevin."

We were really excited to be able to worship via livestream with our church family from Drew and Jamie's camper! How crazy cool is that?!

We had cavern tours scheduled but Bill (remember him? My fave) combined us into one big group since we were all together. He took us down into the caverns and put up with all our questions and picture-taking!

We passed a stairway and Noah asked about it, so Bill graciously took us down to the "classroom" area of the cave that they use for school groups! It was impressive.

One notable thing about the Caverns of Sonora is how warm and humid it was, considering that most caves are cool and dry. My understanding is that it is a "living" cave, and we could actually see stalactites and stalagmites slowly dripping and forming!

Another amazing thing that is so different about these caverns is how close you are to all the formations. It's not a massive, wide open cave like Carlsbad, but rather an intimate and varied trail through the caverns. It was fascinating!

What an awesome experience! We recommend these caverns, but maybe not the RV park...

The gift shop is really awesome. The kids spent a LOT of time in there and did their best to spend a LOT of money! 

That evening, we tried grilling pizzas for the first time on a camping trip. They turned out pretty good, although cooking five pizzas on 2-3 grills was problematic. We'll have to perfect it next time!
