On Thursday, 12/29, we hit the road early to head all the way to the southwestern part of BBNP, to the trailhead of the Santa Elena Canyon hike. We were lucky enough to get there early for a good parking spot! This hike was one of our favorites!
The Santa Elena Canyon was carved by the Rio Grande, and in these photos, the left side is Mexico and the right side is Texas/USA.
To avoid crossing the river and getting wet, we went a more roundabout way to cross and get back to the trail. It involved some scrambling up a steep hill.
There were no bad views!

After conquering the Canyon, we headed back north a little to the Castolon Historic District and Visitor Center.
At the Visitor Center, we met a great ranger and Audrey earned her badge!
The ranger then gave us an amazing personal tour of the historic district.
We continued driving north along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, and had to stop for photos at the famous Mule Ears formation.
Towards the end of the trail, we spotted what we thought were mountain goats but turned out to be desert bighorn sheep!
The pour-off was AWESOME!
A gorgeous and satisfying day spent on the west side of Big Bend National Park!
