A Few April Fools

A little April Fool's weekend fun:
Which of the following April Fool's Day occurrences actually took place?

1. Jimmy got pulled over on his way to San Angelo for speeding, had an expired driver's license, yet still only received a warning from a state trooper...

2. Chris possibly broke his big toe by taking a dive from the top of a 7-foot fence...

3. Jimmy and Courtney broke up...

4. Dick and Barbara were married 60 years ago, and Barbara was barely 17 years old...

5. Jimmy had a booger on his face...

6. GGB made gourmet cat entrees and served them to the neighborhood kitties...

Answer: 1, 2, 4, and 6!

We'll start with Friday, the day of Fools itself.

Jamie, Steph, Noah and I hit the road early and decided to play a few pranks, most involving claiming to have a flat tire. We succeeded in tricking Chris and Drew, so were somewhat expecting attempts to fool us back throughout the day.

As we are getting settled in the hotel and getting lunch, Chris calls Jamie asking where she keeps the spare key to the house. She tells him she no longer keeps a spare, but he says Drew told him there was one in the garage freezer (it hasn't been there for almost a year). Chris had already scaled the relatively new 7-foot fence to get into the garage and check, and he was quite angry to learn that there was no key. In his frustration, elevated blood pressure, and the heat of the day, he decides not to relax in the backyard and wait for Drew to come home, but instead to climb back over the fence using a stack of old tires for leverage. From what I understand, as he is perched on the top, ready to drop down onto the concrete driveway, he loses his balance on the tires and his foot catches the top of the fence, breaking several slats. He falls hard onto his right big toe, ballerina en pointe style. He then breaks the inevitable fall to his face with my car, leaving a nice dent in my hood with his hand. He calls in a lot of pain to tell us what happened, and we have a little trouble summoning up some empathy (or belief, for that matter. April fool's?). Finally, we believe his story (based on the pain in his voice) and call Sharon to come check on him. When she arrives, Chris is white as a ghost and is told to sit down. He later told me he saw a bright light and heard angels singing or something... basically, he almost passed out from the pain/shock/heat/blood pressure/drama. So when Drew arrives, key in hand, he finds Sharon and Jim hunched over Chris, who is flat on his back on the front porch. Chris was able to tolerate the pain through the weekend, with a little help from our 800 mg ibuprofen friend, but is going to the doctor today since he can barely walk on it.

Chris and Mark followed Drew, Jimmy and Courtney to San Angelo that evening, and yes, Jimmy did get pulled over for going 71 in a 65 and got away with a warning. It's those dimples.

Meanwhile, those of us in San Angelo got on with our lives in the wake of Chris' tragedy, visiting at GGB and Grandpa Dick's house (where we witnessed the Feeding of the Cats), then eating and playing at Tracy and Greg's.
Four slowly appear, followed by two more... I believe two others were absent today...
Saturday, we did some retail therapy at Eggemeyer's and Deja Vu (resale clothing boutique), then got ready for the big anniversary celebration. Yes, they really did get married on April Fool's Day. The party was a smashing success, with 27 guests and 7 dogs. We ate delicious barbecue and enjoyed the nice weather (as it got later in the day) and time with friends and family.

Sunday, some of us attended worship services and then we all got together at GGB and Dick's to enjoy the morning, feed the chickens, and shoot the breeze. Back to Tracy and Greg's for leftovers, then we said our goodbyes and hit the road.

We had a lovely weekend with family and enjoyed celebrating Dick and Barbara, two wonderful people who have set a great example for all of us by working on a beautiful marriage for sixty years. Congratulations!
